Last week, Splash, a sprawling two-floor gay club on West 17th Street in Chelsea, announced that it was closing on Aug. But its contribution to gay culture was more democratic. Opened in , just as gay men were colonizing Chelsea, Splash pioneered a new kind of gay bar: it was big, sleek and shiny. Among its innovations were translucent shower stalls where muscular, nearly naked men would dance hence its name. The format would be seen at gay bars worldwide, including the Raidd Bar in Paris, the Saloon in Minneapolis and the Glam club on Mykonos.
